Mar 16, 2018 at 3:06 | comment | added | snyderj | For the record, I got things working and discovered that I had two primary issues: I was using the wrong cable type--needed an A9C0313 (590-0335) or A9C0314 (590-0556) but was using a Mac to IW1, so I snipped and re-soldered to the proper pin-out and that worked; and I was using the wrong card type as pointed out--needed serial not parallel. I also suspect that the parallel card was bad too since it locked up the system even with nothing connected. Thanks for the assistance.

"recognize as a serial interface" just means that it implements the driver for a serial card, for better software compatibility. This is important for Pascal, and applications using the Pascal approach to hardware, which depend on these ROM interfaces.
Mar 10, 2018 at 19:56 | comment | added | snyderj | @NickWestgate - The card I have is like this printer interface card. The manual I have been using is this printer interface user guide, which mentions the "recognize the card as a serial interface". But, as you stated, the ops manual does state up front that it's parallel. Sounds plausible. Thanks.
Mar 10, 2018 at 19:49 | comment | added | Nick Westgate | @snyderj: The Operator's Manual says it's parallel on page 1. Also, parallel cards are very simple, with just a ROM and some 74 series logic chips. Serial cards will have a serial controller chip, but the Grappler(+) doesn't.
Mar 10, 2018 at 19:30 | comment | added | snyderj | I understand the concept of parallel vs. serial, but can one tell the difference just by looking at the hardware? I didn't see reference to 'parallel' in the Grappler+ manual (this is a Grappler+, not a 9-pin), and the only mention of serial is "Pascal 1.0 and CP/M will both recognize the card as a serial interface". Edit: Hmmm... I found a different Grappler+ manual that says it's parallel. I'll need to figure out what I have. Thanks for all the ideas.

Evidently it is doing this continuously as NOT SELECTED flashes and the beep happens continuously (about six times per second). Also, it happens regardless of whether Select is lit or off, even with paper in. There is no red error light.
