The American Standard Code for Information Interchange is a 7-bit character encoding. It represents the US variant of the ISO-646 standard, aka International Alphabet No. 5 (IA5).
Do not use this tag for binary-coded-decimal (even if some Intel instructions call it "adjust for ASCII"); for that use binary-coded-decimal instead.
For extensions and modifications of ASCII, using character-set instead may be more appropriate.
