There is a very minor difference between the "/dev/console" terminal port and any other "/dev/ttyxx" terminal ports: whether the port is optional. For the console port, the port is on a card that came with the base PDP-11 system (not an optional add-on). On some models of PDP-11 the port was on a separate card (or set of cards, e.g. the KL11 on a PDP-11/20)...

The system administrator console is the “terminal” used for system boot: init starts there, with a single-user shell, and only when that finishes does the system continue to multi-user boot (enabling the other terminals). The linked manpage has the details. The V6 PDP-11 installation instructions show how to enable additional terminals (connecting over TCP/...

By default, the delete character (ASCII 127, ^?) acts as the interrupt key (usually bound to ^C on more modern Unix-like systems). Pressing the interrupt key will behave as you describe. In Unix v7 there's no easy way to change this except to modify the kernel. If your terminal sends a delete character when you press the backspace key, try modifying your ...

I've used several PDP-11's in a university environment (in the appropriate time period). The engineering ones were usually a bit smaller than the Computer Science ones, as they often controlled equipment rather than ran numerical work. Numerical work would have been done on larger mainframes. For example, I've seen machines controlling X-ray microscopes and ...

Please try the following: Find out what your backspace key is generating, by running od -b then pressing backspace, then ctrl-D. If ctrl-D doesn't work, press up to 16 arbitrary different characters, then press Enter to see the output, then press ctrl-C. Say stty erase ^H if backspace generates byte 010, or stty erase ^_ if backspace generates byte 0177.

I've got copies of the swt6800mp-a and swtp6800mp-a2 binaries, They are basically the same. The A2 only offers 4 'sockets' for 2 KiB (EP)ROMs at C000, C800, F000, F8000 in addition. I thought it should be as simple as this, but I keep getting a mysterious "Unit not attached" error: Well, you might want to name the unit you want to examine as well: sim&...

You can also install simh from MacPorts; to install it do: port install simh As the time of this writing, MacPorts is installing simh V3.8-1. I am also adding how to run Unix System 7, as I found a couple of inconsistencies in the original instructions: Now for putting it to work with Unix system7, download the PDP 11 Unix 7 tape image from http://simh....

What homebrew will install for you on MacOS as of today (Aug. 30 2017) is simh V3.9, which does look to be the latest non-beta release at present. A beta release of simh V4.0 is available that is also supported on current and recent versions of MacOS. You can find it at https://github.com/simh/simh if you're interested. V4.0 introduces support for emulating ...
