The VAX, for Virtual Address eXtension, was originally conceived as an extension of the PDP-11 with a larger address space. However, it emerged as an entirely new architecture, though recognizably related to the PDP-11. Initial models such as the VAX-11/780 incorporated a PDP-11 compatibility mode.
