If a game had a weird glitch when test code was excluded from the build, but including test code shifted addresses around in a way that made the glitch disappear, tracking down what was going on would be difficult. By contrast, if the choice of whether to enable or disable the test code would have minimal impact on anything else, the test code could be used to inspect what was going on when things glitched. | |
Nov 5, 2016 at 15:29 | comment | added | user1306322 | The reason why that extra unused code is not deleted is most probably because it was being used to debug the game, and once it's been established that it worked well enough with that specific data on the cartridge, that's what they were gonna ship to customers. Just guessing from coding experience though, no hard info. | |
